THE FRISIANS

Today, the Friesian horse is celebrated as one of the most elegant and refined breeds in the equine world. Its presence in exhibitions and competitions has surged, and it has become a global symbol of beauty and distinction.

The Friesian horse hails from the Friesland region in the Netherlands, with a history deeply intertwined with the culture and traditions of the area. For centuries, Friesians were essential workhorses, primarily used to pull carriages and plows. Their strength, endurance, and versatility made them vital in everyday life.

During the Middle Ages, the Friesian gained prominence as a war and cavalry horse, known for its courageous temperament and unwavering loyalty to its rider. Over the centuries, the breed was crossed with others, but it has always preserved its unique characteristics.

TYPE
The Friesian breed is distinguished by its small head, which carries a lively and noble expression, large eyes, and a slightly concave nose. Its jaws are fine, and the ears are small, subtly tilting towards the center. The transition between the head and neck should be smooth and refined, with a long, upright neck. The mane's crest, when viewed from behind, should be straight and vertical, avoiding any C or S shapes. The ideal color is a deep, almost jet-black coat, free of white markings. Overall, the Friesian should present an elegant stature with rounded, harmonious lines.

CONFORMATION
Over the past 70 years, the Friesian breed has undergone a remarkable transformation in its conformation. Once a smaller, stocky, and heavy horse, suited for agricultural work, the breed has recently evolved into a taller, lighter, and more agile animal. This evolution has been driven by the desire to compete at the highest levels of equestrian sport.

MOVEMENTS

The unique movements of this breed are a crucial factor in their evaluation, and for judges in the Netherlands, they are the most important criterion. In fact, movement scores carry more weight than conformation scores. Special emphasis is placed on a powerful, balanced walk where the hind leg reaches or even exceeds the front hoofprint, resulting in a long, regular, and rhythmic stride with harmonious body movement.

For the trot, power and good reach are also sought, enabling the horse to achieve self-carriage. Proper flexion in the hock and efficient action of the forelimbs are key considerations. The horse should exhibit an upward position, demonstrating flexibility, balance, relaxation, and a smooth, well-maintained suspension.

The Friesian has proven to be highly versatile, captivating audiences with its striking beauty. Despite its evolution, one enduring characteristic remains: its calm, relaxed temperament, always marked by a noble presence.
